A private doctor (Wahlarzt) is a physician who does not have contracts with public health insurance providers and bills patients directly for medical services. Patients are free to choose their preferred private doctor but must initially cover the costs themselves. After the consultation, they can submit the invoice to their health insurance provider for partial reimbursement, depending on their insurance coverage. Many supplementary health insurances fully cover the costs of private medical services.
